The crew of the Enterprise was a vision of the future and what could be. It is truly a change when the actor that played Spock leaves us. Wil Wheaton wrote a beautiful entry on his blog about Leonard Nimoy and his legacy.<br />

<br />
I am getting a handle on life, family, education, teaching, house, and building a new house. I have lots to report and share.Lorihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08591117435183287715noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14910628.post-42965897689369124102014-04-24T09:04:00.003-07:002014-04-24T09:04:41.372-07:00HonorI know I have been missing for over a month, but I have made some wonderful things. I will post them soon. My grad classes are taking more time this semester, but the semester is almost over, so I should have some free time soon.<br />
<br />
In the meantime, here is a gorgeous video from Honor:<br />

I am really loving the white coat that Zosia Mamet is wearing. I think I will add that to my never-ending project pile.Lorihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08591117435183287715noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14910628.post-68896532238159594402014-03-03T14:04:00.003-08:002014-03-03T14:08:45.177-08:00Fan Re-Do<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This project took way too long! But I am in the mood to finish up some of my UFO's (Un-Finished Objects), because I want the space back. This fan project started with a box fan that I had inherited from my Great-Aunt Marie. It worked well, but over time the plastic grating on the front and back began to disintegrate leaving openings large enough for little fingers or dog noses.</div>

I sanded, primed, and then sprayed the entire metal case bright orange which I did not take a picture of.... so moving on. I chose a 1/2" hardware cloth for the new protective screening. I folded under about 2" all the way around.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I attached the screen to the fan box using sheet metal screws that were longer than the original screws. The screws go through these cool large washers and then through a felt washer that I made out of wool felt. I thought there might be some vibration problems, so I added the felt washers. Maybe overkill, but it works well and is quiet.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The I had to replace the handle, as the original plastic handle disintegrated. I used the heavy belt webbing. I tried initially to use rivets through a set of the big washers. The spouse assisted with this part.</div>

I love both apparel and technology passionately and often let one interest slide in favor of the other. I remember sometime in the late 90's while working at adidas, a manufacturer came in with a melton and leather letterman's jacket with a giant LED and embroidery eagle on the back. It was not the most tasteful execution of the intersection of technology and garment, but it did get some gears rolling in my brain.<br />
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A few years ago a former colleague connected me to Jennifer Darmour of <a href="http://www.electricfoxy.com/" target="_blank">Electric Foxy</a> and I collaborated with her on this <a href="http://www.coroflot.com/lori_wahl/Electric-Foxy" target="_blank">project</a>:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSIWFoNUjzoVjcuJqxoF0Q85cl8scYQbq1Lbq3ZkDBkJBNC0m6K0BfSD2-OqdNeulPGoKvPvhutcv-ULqLtv3SufXaTmA6T9DVeN6e7-_IJetLJZPuFoT4NqRDLtXRtDCc-i7P/s1600/Electricfoxy_Zip_phone.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSIWFoNUjzoVjcuJqxoF0Q85cl8scYQbq1Lbq3ZkDBkJBNC0m6K0BfSD2-OqdNeulPGoKvPvhutcv-ULqLtv3SufXaTmA6T9DVeN6e7-_IJetLJZPuFoT4NqRDLtXRtDCc-i7P/s1600/Electricfoxy_Zip_phone.jpg" height="320" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I did all the garment designing, pattern making, and prototyping and some material sourcing. Jennifer did all the circuit designing and stitching of conductive thread and fitting on the model. She used the <a href="http://lilypadarduino.org/" target="_blank">Lilypad</a> system by <a href="http://www.arduino.cc/" target="_blank">Arduino</a> which is designed for garments and is washable. You can buy the Lilypad and Arduino systems and other components at <a href="https://www.sparkfun.com/" target="_blank">SparkFun</a>. Which is what I did! I bought the Lilypad Design Kit:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The packaging alone is swoon-worthy! And the lid closes with a magnet too! This is clearly a message that it is time to get going on learning this technology.</div>

The next sign was the announcement on <a href="http://rheingold.com/" target="_blank">Howard Rheingold</a>'s <a href="https://twitter.com/hrheingold" target="_blank">Twitter feed</a> of a <a href="https://beta.homago.com/" target="_blank">HOMAGO</a> <a href="https://beta.homago.com/arduino/geekout/118/wearable-lilypad-design-kit-buildalong/210" target="_blank">Geekout</a> on using this very kit! There are four separate links in the previous sentence that will take you to all the answers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Geekout was presented through <a href="https://www.google.com/+/learnmore/hangouts/onair.html" target="_blank">Google Hangouts-on-Air</a>. There were nine of us in the class plus Howard and Angela from Spark Fun who explained the contents of the kit and led us through a simple project. Here we are in process of the Geekout:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_Pa0L8pxpALfm52b4-iUp_CPW24Lz89foESdzR9cz3pkN56uC9DosWYKnmaQISefWxlq-wZSPjs8hIb9QzJ1TIvDtkyOZTXtY7ejtkzhAY5T_p12EkIpFz3ygVr9-VRe14aV5/s1600/desktop+geekout.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_Pa0L8pxpALfm52b4-iUp_CPW24Lz89foESdzR9cz3pkN56uC9DosWYKnmaQISefWxlq-wZSPjs8hIb9QzJ1TIvDtkyOZTXtY7ejtkzhAY5T_p12EkIpFz3ygVr9-VRe14aV5/s1600/desktop+geekout.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And the final project!</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMKOzc2g9YR2fN76SAFYc-JA9-6lHlFVSPeq5xv16-ebBJylQB7ydRICXuRbKRx31MfengMTGPbkMdaz5SoQmpm8jAA98vbC3Z-DUAQMBX_aLZKxBtSIab2mlBeF22ki3CTuGW/s1600/IMG_2246.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMKOzc2g9YR2fN76SAFYc-JA9-6lHlFVSPeq5xv16-ebBJylQB7ydRICXuRbKRx31MfengMTGPbkMdaz5SoQmpm8jAA98vbC3Z-DUAQMBX_aLZKxBtSIab2mlBeF22ki3CTuGW/s1600/IMG_2246.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
... lit up with 3 LED's. No short circuiting and everything works.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I even got out the meter to check resistance on the conductive thread and a few other things. This project focused on creating the circuit properly to achieve lit LED's. There are other ways to do this same thing with all the hardware and stitching hidden.</div>

Before Christmas we discovered the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Woodland-Knits-over-enchanting-patterns/dp/1627100245/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1393447585&sr=8-1&keywords=woodland+knits" target="_blank">Woodland Knits</a> book by <a href="http://tinyowlknits.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">Stephanie Dosen</a>. Both E and I fell in love with the hat on the cover.</div>

... and wouldn't you know it! I had all the yarn on hand for this project! I would not call this project a stash buster as you need very little yarn for the antlers and the interior of the ears. You only need one skein for the hat and ears. I used some free yarn that came with a Knit Rowan subscription. It is a beautifully soft wool that has now all been knitted up.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I need something like this when I am walking across campus in the winter. This last December was very cold. I would get my hair, make-up and self all fixed up only to put a hat on and trudge across the cold, wintery landscape with eyes watering to arrive at my building looking no better than I did when I rolled out of bed. I think this hood could change everything! Will get back to you on that.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
On a further note, my eyelashes have grown back!... mostly. </div>

This happens when I return to Portland after teaching and have the holidays.<br />
<br />
I did get a new driveway put into the property last fall. We can now drive in and out without fear of sinking into mud, or missing the driveway and putting ourselves in the ditch.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDFY_LDt_gkxGPeVtuK4-29eGEtcdKrXROG0Gn5jWvdu_1zNsGkdJYUo6UEyUJiwwWeqhuUyv5LnGNhK5wp1ilAtw6kGWrZqAC0wzCFwUx6vgpu7p3auSp9qKTQpVt4H7tzvMq/s1600/driveway.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDFY_LDt_gkxGPeVtuK4-29eGEtcdKrXROG0Gn5jWvdu_1zNsGkdJYUo6UEyUJiwwWeqhuUyv5LnGNhK5wp1ilAtw6kGWrZqAC0wzCFwUx6vgpu7p3auSp9qKTQpVt4H7tzvMq/s1600/driveway.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We did some more tree and brush clearing over Christmas and, of course, more marshmallow roasting!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCgIpRIzijhaya6FGcOd1RV58fZf0VCSBmvs_X274SC3NIOk5KUOWKeK1eJpJ5xwf5vPwUY5XjDSzMV93AikgJS90Uyc2QKTNIobXkSk66_6pnvThrzC3tXOJWr4XKKXpAozLT/s1600/winter+bonfire.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCgIpRIzijhaya6FGcOd1RV58fZf0VCSBmvs_X274SC3NIOk5KUOWKeK1eJpJ5xwf5vPwUY5XjDSzMV93AikgJS90Uyc2QKTNIobXkSk66_6pnvThrzC3tXOJWr4XKKXpAozLT/s1600/winter+bonfire.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I accidentally burned off half my eyelashes. I was packing the branches tighter so they would burn better and what do you know? They did. Quickly! My skin didn't burn, but my eyelashes are much, much shorter and were curly... until that part broke off. New eyelashes take 2 to 3 months to grow. I am working on growing new ones.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3Sbq5Fy2vlKySmUOGEdNcFgeV9NnAnZkysKL9_gLrU_3JeVB6w_68hAMc9wE5vqb6Mg3HrDsY_Uy5mbGxV-rKJ96uasPrGlm94VoLQaWkxbHmyc0d5Z2ShKvnoFHuqzjpicTb/s1600/IMG_1755.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3Sbq5Fy2vlKySmUOGEdNcFgeV9NnAnZkysKL9_gLrU_3JeVB6w_68hAMc9wE5vqb6Mg3HrDsY_Uy5mbGxV-rKJ96uasPrGlm94VoLQaWkxbHmyc0d5Z2ShKvnoFHuqzjpicTb/s320/IMG_1755.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Last week the family was here too, so we roasted hot dogs and made smores. Eventually we gave up on the graham crackers and just focused on the marshmallows and chocolate.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmxCXMboJn44utabPegZvLFARGHNRgkW5SV_IqxlWwQRzF5ry0XYXQRkEfrk-c_rZGL8VVWASjF0Stu3iwLyvaTnIHnKN_f1XZcvW-YyOwrcVdFmsGseGK3NCCc5kiTh8vz_T1/s1600/IMG_1792.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmxCXMboJn44utabPegZvLFARGHNRgkW5SV_IqxlWwQRzF5ry0XYXQRkEfrk-c_rZGL8VVWASjF0Stu3iwLyvaTnIHnKN_f1XZcvW-YyOwrcVdFmsGseGK3NCCc5kiTh8vz_T1/s320/IMG_1792.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The individual above ate the majority of the bag of marshmallows. Good thing he had a lot of exercise that day.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We continue to find treasures. This is a really large metal wheel about 3' in diameter. Unfortunately I don't have anything in the picture for scale. It is very heavy and will take some work to get it propped up for another picture. When I do, I will add something for scale. Until then, it needs to dry out so we can get the mud/dirt out of it.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCWS-uIqBRe-eAmRUZzImQB0qnYcphqpLJapFDtvD6g30Zyu_VcnTMunFdCeaglpbOSOyXbOzF1QfQ5nMyn5nxKgiZN2kVy-k5wbO03leXvf80JqYp8iuTyVmWcI54E5H7WhHH/s1600/IMG_1806.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCWS-uIqBRe-eAmRUZzImQB0qnYcphqpLJapFDtvD6g30Zyu_VcnTMunFdCeaglpbOSOyXbOzF1QfQ5nMyn5nxKgiZN2kVy-k5wbO03leXvf80JqYp8iuTyVmWcI54E5H7WhHH/s320/IMG_1806.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I have also made more piles. I asked the neighbor if he wanted some free wood. He said "Yes", so I said "Great! Bring your chain saw." He showed up and cut through a large amount of dead wood and branches growing toward the road like a rabid beaver through a forest of saplings. In less than an hour, I had a stack of wood for more than two piles. The neighbor didn't want the wood. It wasn't straight enough for splitting. Apparently I need to learn more about wood quality.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMhTfvFUbocyTBcoHhNg-CD9tuNCXt26hef1RJtgYi9F9J1VPySCQp4RKQJRv0HSC2HkntKarmc0rm5uRMlD2zK9FjChGLbfNn8WOO5BrSvHEHpTWbQsbQUYHiQ_maYVpIMuh4/s1600/IMG_1824.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMhTfvFUbocyTBcoHhNg-CD9tuNCXt26hef1RJtgYi9F9J1VPySCQp4RKQJRv0HSC2HkntKarmc0rm5uRMlD2zK9FjChGLbfNn8WOO5BrSvHEHpTWbQsbQUYHiQ_maYVpIMuh4/s320/IMG_1824.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After all that work, my arms were sore and didn't want to operate properly, so I took some time off and made this!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Actually the necklace took less than an hour, but the first time I tried it with supplies from Michael's it didn't work. So I ordered the proper crimp ends from <a href="http://www.firemountaingems.com/" target="_blank">Fire Mountain Gems</a>... which is AWESOME!!! and the best place to buy things. Plus they ship super fast. The picture is a little low rez so not all the details are visible. </div>

I fulfilled his request as best as I could:<br />

My mom helped me. It is actually a sour cream chocolate cake that has been cut up and layered with chocolate mousse. Technically it is a trifle. I did not have a trifle bowl which is glass with straight sides... so I made do with this.</div>

We brought down the Caterpillar to drag out a stump. It overheated on the way down. It wouldn't start the next day.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXHvDIzBGqEnxuZW1HrigvN_H2kx2onjQIkPejncPwofA5DutxFTvOExb1xc41Jv5KmOWawhHp-DBG_Tcmm_C6O2QRNLHODnK-AWFeGgZXTDqZPnZtNciiKUXXQcgZSvwnzXDU/s1600/IMG_1592.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXHvDIzBGqEnxuZW1HrigvN_H2kx2onjQIkPejncPwofA5DutxFTvOExb1xc41Jv5KmOWawhHp-DBG_Tcmm_C6O2QRNLHODnK-AWFeGgZXTDqZPnZtNciiKUXXQcgZSvwnzXDU/s320/IMG_1592.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So then we brought down another tractor- the HD11 (orange one). Dad used the HD11 to pull out the Caterpillar (yellow one) so we could jump start it. Once it was started (and filled with plenty of radiator fluid), we left both tractors running (just in case either wouldn't start again) and drove the Caterpillar back to the shop for maintenance. It overheated again.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi43ZjY3s93hWhxyGVC2_JXFxm_cs3sAsS6NuZRE7rpraAI__wOW0zMm5mmzK7BXeJCPu2K0XgZwqBVVQypqwWlipT0zt5CTCzTaNVKLCuwAmf-JQTpca7J49MnHQ3tj1sgBgla/s1600/IMG_1599.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi43ZjY3s93hWhxyGVC2_JXFxm_cs3sAsS6NuZRE7rpraAI__wOW0zMm5mmzK7BXeJCPu2K0XgZwqBVVQypqwWlipT0zt5CTCzTaNVKLCuwAmf-JQTpca7J49MnHQ3tj1sgBgla/s320/IMG_1599.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then we used the HD11 to finally get that stump out. It is a small stump for so many tractors.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjn_zAMtU5UUd6lmC8ycIM5BooKUSF6fMKbEBqILCdGPV3lecm1ycXd82vHhwO9XWtBtQPv3lf0-_XrgWpvXjZDFL3_IhQuiXL7cNpzz1WZo8tD_5x0yKDIwvPByM2BAE4-2jm_/s1600/IMG_1602.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjn_zAMtU5UUd6lmC8ycIM5BooKUSF6fMKbEBqILCdGPV3lecm1ycXd82vHhwO9XWtBtQPv3lf0-_XrgWpvXjZDFL3_IhQuiXL7cNpzz1WZo8tD_5x0yKDIwvPByM2BAE4-2jm_/s320/IMG_1602.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
However..... on the way back to the shop, the exhaust pipe came into contact with an over hanging branch.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It is not supposed to be bent at the that angle... not even for aerodynamics. Eventually it just came off.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It now has a brand new exhaust pipe.... but now won't start. Good thing we got that stump out.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Have you ever seen one tractor pulling another? Watch this video and see it in action!</div>

Continuing work on my project down the road.... I make many piles of brush and tree parts. It looks like some rare dry-land beaver is building air dams across the property providing a series of wind breaks that it can scurry between. The piles have to be small enough and far enough apart that they can be burned individually (later in the fall) without everything going up at once.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Sometimes my dad helps me. He is on the wheel tractor... dragging a section of the roof.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnIbUp-guxM8drVk-zCrvVyIK0-_W6hFoRVgoVZp5WgKZ-JTgQWFJOuCpT3TU3R86IypckmU8vHKIpx4W1km6fAIeWgGFvuOT-CiaRtV6uxiUAV9I31Qm0Tfn3W_AwSFxxhErl/s1600/IMG_1555.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnIbUp-guxM8drVk-zCrvVyIK0-_W6hFoRVgoVZp5WgKZ-JTgQWFJOuCpT3TU3R86IypckmU8vHKIpx4W1km6fAIeWgGFvuOT-CiaRtV6uxiUAV9I31Qm0Tfn3W_AwSFxxhErl/s320/IMG_1555.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Treasures from the ground... I unearthed these while cleaning out the root cellar. I can't believe the 2 quart Atlas was in one piece.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCwWb9YWwCTPcrXKjF0hoWVPjQZM63cnlEZ-T76UxxUqA_TNnuKpGBy4EYNRCPLbPOt0kH-S6LL1VJEZug01g6Os4khOmp3woC9VrxzyZAJ9rUI4z8oCzwUc4iLIwna066ZXiO/s1600/IMG_1560.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCwWb9YWwCTPcrXKjF0hoWVPjQZM63cnlEZ-T76UxxUqA_TNnuKpGBy4EYNRCPLbPOt0kH-S6LL1VJEZug01g6Os4khOmp3woC9VrxzyZAJ9rUI4z8oCzwUc4iLIwna066ZXiO/s320/IMG_1560.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the interior of the root cellar currently. I have taken a break from this project for a bit to work on the new driveway opening in the hawthornes, but will be back to continue scooping out dirt and stones and hoping to find more treasures.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
5 gallons of broken glass anyone? There is a lot of broken glass and metal in the ground. I couldn't come up with a clever use for this much broken glass...</div>

Always during transitions, I seem to drop off the blogging radar. August was busy with prep for school for both the kids and me. I had a lot of work to do on the some of the lesson plans and online learning spaces ahead of Fall semester at the University of Idaho. But I got it done and passed my motorcycle class at the same time, so I am now officially endorsed! More on that later.<br />
<br />
I am now in Idaho teaching again. In my spare time, I am working on clearing and prepping some property up here for a future project. Hint: The project does not involve a sewing machine.<br />
<br />
The work is a lot like Minecraft:<br />
<br />
We clear the wood.....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmsuYDY673iwZKBoWFFCIkM2cUN18IM6UtpzWVGmW-7Ev3WAGYHaPVXJSLEzFrSQkg7tLkkvyVwquWy2mRLvtCx1-Ikb2Ste1IeRF2wzWTJ5euOaO3lA0GTy6ZAsX7iwLINdW2/s1600/cutting+trees.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmsuYDY673iwZKBoWFFCIkM2cUN18IM6UtpzWVGmW-7Ev3WAGYHaPVXJSLEzFrSQkg7tLkkvyVwquWy2mRLvtCx1-Ikb2Ste1IeRF2wzWTJ5euOaO3lA0GTy6ZAsX7iwLINdW2/s320/cutting+trees.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
...in Mincraft we get to wear cool iron armor though....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3fOHlqQZ_blv6CdFXduNxij3Xr6KrMv-chAoCIsfI2D-Lyl25K7DTLJQFMHX5_uyAQ1K3fEUKjzc95aSYj2qN4d1Bqb-ibipT3abimhvxUVGJwnMZi5DU7YesH7ZmJs_v2C8G/s1600/Mincrafting+Woodcutting.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3fOHlqQZ_blv6CdFXduNxij3Xr6KrMv-chAoCIsfI2D-Lyl25K7DTLJQFMHX5_uyAQ1K3fEUKjzc95aSYj2qN4d1Bqb-ibipT3abimhvxUVGJwnMZi5DU7YesH7ZmJs_v2C8G/s320/Mincrafting+Woodcutting.jpg" width="305" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There will be some stones to deal with in the future. For now we are stacking all rocks by the walls that are remains on the root cellar...</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiT0pG5C3M-_ASFVpL3Ojm4lwuaqHmzCc8Q4xC6FS0Rrwj5yAD6v2AudJOOkEW9dPYxJ7exd3wAjsxvXElKrANPDR0gXKjLm5kyYpzBTNENxkdH7taku8oiHRdZ5mkPlCzXOzOn/s1600/summer+cellar.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiT0pG5C3M-_ASFVpL3Ojm4lwuaqHmzCc8Q4xC6FS0Rrwj5yAD6v2AudJOOkEW9dPYxJ7exd3wAjsxvXElKrANPDR0gXKjLm5kyYpzBTNENxkdH7taku8oiHRdZ5mkPlCzXOzOn/s320/summer+cellar.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
... in Minecraft the rocks are square and stack much more easily. Again, you get to wear cool armor in Minecraft. I tore my shirt on a thorn tree. I wished that I had had iron chest armor. I do have a hard hat though which is kind of like a helmet.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is what the property looks like in the spring. There is somewhere around 40 years of overgrowth that needs to be cleared. We have opened up all the access roads so we can now get to all the pasture areas for weed and mowing maintenance. We are now clearing around the house and getting ready to dismantle the house and salvage as much wood as we can.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

Fortunately we do not need to mine for iron and make our own iron pickaxes and shovels. I can find those tools in the garage.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
However, there is a lot of extra room in the back. More than is needed for wearing over clothes, so I need to take a little in. Also the sleeves are wider than I wanted, so I will be narrowing those slightly and adjusting the pattern.</div>

He was at the <a href="http://www.oregonzoo.org/visit/2013-summer-concerts" target="_blank">Oregon Zoo</a>. Amazing show with his great band. He played most of his recognizable hits, but not all. He did not do "Living With a Hernia" which I really like. I bought tickets the day they were available. Go see him... you will smile and laugh the whole time.</div>

I have misplaced my tailoring book(s), so I'm doing most of this from memory. And this fabric is nothing I would ever use for a true tailored jacket, so I am proceeding with mostly speed/fusible pseudo-tailoring techniques. Basically anything that will help this floppy, rumply fabric take and hold shape. I applied fusible interfacing to the fronts up to the roll line.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRpd3VosNzVi7rTmRoDIaoJYddZGJMTeCnGFCgY5R4F2U8rHeIm2no9rGWUAw8r_7Axm_m4Ue5yDqN9XaIcy5EHpWuLd1gpwtx8i8Y1PCfVxt-H8Yc_2FCe_43iwTzTfG6_bKZ/s1600/IMG_9556.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRpd3VosNzVi7rTmRoDIaoJYddZGJMTeCnGFCgY5R4F2U8rHeIm2no9rGWUAw8r_7Axm_m4Ue5yDqN9XaIcy5EHpWuLd1gpwtx8i8Y1PCfVxt-H8Yc_2FCe_43iwTzTfG6_bKZ/s320/IMG_9556.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Double checking things before dropping in the upper collar/facings. Both the upper and under collars and stands are interfaced. I have been spending more time in <a href="http://www.brooksbrothers.com/" target="_blank">Brooks Brothers</a> and <a href="http://www.us.thomaspink.com/" target="_blank">Thomas Pink</a> lately and their collars and cuffs on everything could stand up and serve drinks! I have a shirt from each maker and have come to appreciate collar and cuff weight interfacing. They are crisp and smooth and require little pressing after wash. For this project, I am using a standard medium weight fusible interfacing. It was on hand, and I wasn't planning on this jacket being smooth and crisp anyway. There is a collar and cuff weight fusible that I have used for other projects that is superior to this stuff.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzNxRWrKUcDLvhC4hsG0Z4gRXqR__c4CoYnNkVuWmjTd9JlfrtqX5aGygH8B9QmjK33jcgezbJ0qiwQFNG9n5t4xit_RKoYdGrKEPV69QaXzkbAiqoChwwgtJkQtIfxGjp_I2v/s1600/IMG_9557.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzNxRWrKUcDLvhC4hsG0Z4gRXqR__c4CoYnNkVuWmjTd9JlfrtqX5aGygH8B9QmjK33jcgezbJ0qiwQFNG9n5t4xit_RKoYdGrKEPV69QaXzkbAiqoChwwgtJkQtIfxGjp_I2v/s320/IMG_9557.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I am loving that binder! Look at the beautiful finished edge on the facing! I am getting better at cutting bias strips too. Things still aren't perfect. The underside of the binding has fabric that is not quite turned under. I think the binding scroll is too open. A project for another day. You would have to dig deep into the garment to see this problem, so I am not sweating it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjabmcStRKKncnLIeGJwidrF5udoCBLSoCEghKp-bJmAK5qEDaxTy5GuUp8bq7iSbQnWJct0wRW8Lvt1jZ-vsaqJXYKXNWIV3kLD2ePKHCl0WdpvPb3bY6AubKEramWuxU-6cYH/s1600/IMG_9560.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjabmcStRKKncnLIeGJwidrF5udoCBLSoCEghKp-bJmAK5qEDaxTy5GuUp8bq7iSbQnWJct0wRW8Lvt1jZ-vsaqJXYKXNWIV3kLD2ePKHCl0WdpvPb3bY6AubKEramWuxU-6cYH/s320/IMG_9560.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
With the upper collar/facing pieces applied....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJoNElkbR7-mnerUKgteH-nRlUhfPBBZ9pJmCNZmQlcgvX9ooK8lBctGq0qo-NCuzXXafR3uo18NKHZPrIloE80PfDCADeV3ousqvGpvGdpyJkCc960vemucO16aQPvh5mRRZe/s1600/IMG_9561.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJoNElkbR7-mnerUKgteH-nRlUhfPBBZ9pJmCNZmQlcgvX9ooK8lBctGq0qo-NCuzXXafR3uo18NKHZPrIloE80PfDCADeV3ousqvGpvGdpyJkCc960vemucO16aQPvh5mRRZe/s320/IMG_9561.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
There is some strange bunching at the lower back just above the peplum. This was not there until I bound the seam allowances on the CB seam. The binding tension is too tight and has drawn up (taken up) the seam allowances, so things are not lying flat any more. I will continue to press the heck out of it, but will need to adjust tension for the next jacket if I do the bound seam allowances.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhW2lFuJX7ifbpxkOttFNcO7Odn8FOnhdNfa3CjA73ErrlPVFU0l19A5-_jzwdAJXETpMrIwdIXupVj9XwZR96OBuIEIOxSlZ1vyDYvDOXhC07x6HNeHEj0KdjRhajW2XzGOkEV/s1600/IMG_9563.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhW2lFuJX7ifbpxkOttFNcO7Odn8FOnhdNfa3CjA73ErrlPVFU0l19A5-_jzwdAJXETpMrIwdIXupVj9XwZR96OBuIEIOxSlZ1vyDYvDOXhC07x6HNeHEj0KdjRhajW2XzGOkEV/s320/IMG_9563.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Again... due to the weak hand of the fabric, I interfaced along all the hems. This is a great technique to use with any fabric that needs a crisp hem but is too weak to do it on its own. I also bound the raw edge of the hem... which also drew in the width of the fabric and caused some puckering when I sewed the hem in place. Bad combination of weak fabric and too tight tension on the binding... but I am marching on.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwlAsFR-nVNYHkupx124h6dO11loJka6WFox5l06_lOnucFcYHvLZoGnOgC3GKsOYV-XBBbADzpiIWOf4rZgbq_ioNAuRkyu53bLO-DDVIAY0kb9ZfqX1LJx734Bz0y24KIWny/s1600/IMG_9566.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwlAsFR-nVNYHkupx124h6dO11loJka6WFox5l06_lOnucFcYHvLZoGnOgC3GKsOYV-XBBbADzpiIWOf4rZgbq_ioNAuRkyu53bLO-DDVIAY0kb9ZfqX1LJx734Bz0y24KIWny/s320/IMG_9566.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Here is my solution for the body hem. I applied interfacing to the narrow 1/2" hem. Then I applied a bias strip that was folded in half and sewn a scant 1/4" to the hem. Then I pressed the seam allowance down toward the fold and the hem, and then pressed up on the fold of the hem. The result looks just like the binding but with half the bulk AND this method does not have any puckering along the curved hem. I hand sewed it into place.<br />

But I am determined to finish this jacket because I love all the jackets that I see coming down the runway like at <a href="http://www.style.com/fashionshows/review/F2013CTR-JPGAULTI" target="_blank">Gautier</a> and over on <a href="http://www.burdastyle.com/" target="_blank">Burdastyle</a>. <br />

<br />
<br />
Due to my shape, I rarely find things off the rack that fit me... and when I do they are usually knit... which is not what I want. I want structure.<br />
<br />
I am using <a href="http://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/012011-cropped-jacket" target="_blank">Burda 01/2011 Cropped Jacket #127</a>. I adjusted the pattern using my block that I made last fall, and then cut out a muslin.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The balance looks remarkably good. My shoulders curve forward or have more depth than those on a traditional pattern block, so oftentimes the garment sits to the back.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEJrSlBKqgrHBlaB8Qx_iMXF11Vt9yYCn432D-erVqY9sHLddRjMKgaTLAzIe4q6Vzkg4q0ZHbQ3OkCB5q5aqs59PDWqMDk6EwMtLrtyykfrreuQ5pnu5n646qrty3jpg14GT-/s1600/IMG_9542.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEJrSlBKqgrHBlaB8Qx_iMXF11Vt9yYCn432D-erVqY9sHLddRjMKgaTLAzIe4q6Vzkg4q0ZHbQ3OkCB5q5aqs59PDWqMDk6EwMtLrtyykfrreuQ5pnu5n646qrty3jpg14GT-/s320/IMG_9542.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I am planning on using a lightweight cotton plaid for the first jacket. Not a fabric than can be truly tailored with hair canvas and pad stitching, but more of a casual "just throw it on" jacket. It will sew up fairly quickly and give me a change to check the fit more thoroughly before I move onto more expensive goods.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Since the jacket will be mostly unlined and the seam allowances will be exposed, I thought I would play around with binding some of the seams. I set up my Singer Slant-o-Matic (you got to love that machine just for the name) and put on the binding foot.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlW8wpYN5kIshyphenhyphenc_49OCuxBDfs0jTGokmLvIvVuaaICJFpQfOqCh5NGOFdo7PJTxXY5jcJPkeBSpBqWqzK-c92DQXpzcI2Z-P5GkKvVFCR0dOzQdkVUSIYu3whiuNpXYm9kks4/s1600/IMG_9543.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlW8wpYN5kIshyphenhyphenc_49OCuxBDfs0jTGokmLvIvVuaaICJFpQfOqCh5NGOFdo7PJTxXY5jcJPkeBSpBqWqzK-c92DQXpzcI2Z-P5GkKvVFCR0dOzQdkVUSIYu3whiuNpXYm9kks4/s320/IMG_9543.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
At this point, readers, I would like to point out that one should ALWAYS read ALL the instructions FIRST. It will save you a tremendous amount of time. If I would have read everything, I would have cut the bias strip the correct width and been on my way to binding nirvana. Instead I did a trial and error method that took an hour of fussing about.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is the Center Back seam with it's binding. Lovely! There is a peplum/back seam that I did not bind. The binding does add some bulk, so for this jacket I am using a zigzag on the seam allowance edges. I may wind up pressing the seam allowance down (toward the peplum) and clean finishing it with a facing... not sure yet. Doing some field designing here. The pattern calls for a lining, but for this jacket I want to keep it light.</div>

And <a href="http://www.molliemakes.com/" target="_blank">Mollie Makes </a>featured the book <a href="http://www.sarahmoorevintage.com/shop/vintage-home-by-sarah-moore/" target="_blank">Vintage Home</a> in their issue 28 which also had a pieced curtain but made of vintage scarves. Both magazines got me thinking about my excessive collection of vintage hankies. They were originally upcycled into fanciful skirts for toddler girls. The line was called Patache... hence the reason for starting this blog in the first place. But that was a long time ago, and I have moved onto other things, but still have lots of hankies. So I pieced them altogether into a sheer curtain.</div>

Chihuly's glassWe also saw the <a href="http://www.chihulygardenandglass.com/" target="_blank">Chihuly Garden and Glass</a> at Seattle Center last week. It was almost color and shape over load. Part of the exhibit was inside in dark spaces with only the glass sculptures illuminated and the other part was outside with plantings complementing the glass shape and color. In between the indoor and outdoor spaces was a glass house with a red, orange, and yellow undulating stream of glass sculpture dancing across the ceiling.<br />
<br />
The first section included a massive display of Dale Chihuly's Pendleton Blanket Collection. It was incredible to see them displayed this way. The display must have been 20 feet high and at least twice as wide. He has <a href="http://www.chihulyworkshop.com/chihuly-pendleton-blanket-no-5.html" target="_blank">collaborated</a> with Pendleton in the design of blankets combining his design aesthetic and their craftsmanship. Dale Chihuly also has a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/books/dp/1576840158" target="_blank">book</a> available about his connection to and inspiration from Pendleton blankets.<br />

We were in Seattle in the spring of 2012 went the garden was being installed. We saw the steel armatures being built and then other workers carrying in the glass sections and installing them. It was exciting to see the finished sculptures and garden.</div>

1. <a href="http://www.empmuseum.org/at-the-museum/current-exhibits/women-who-rock-vision,-passion,-power.aspx" target="_blank">Women Who Rock at the EMP</a><br />
and<br />
2. <a href="http://www.seattleartmuseum.org/FutureBeauty/fb_site.asp" target="_blank">Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Design at the Seattle Art Museum</a><br />
<br />
Both exhibits were AMAZING!!! My head is still reeling from all the content. Here are some of the highlights.<br />
<br />
The EMP had the history of Women Who Rock arranged chronologically starting in the 1940's. Many of the garments were on loan from the performer's themselves.<br />

There was also a Fantasy exhibit going on too. The metal covered tree in the center had 44,000 had applied metal scales. The dragon from the Seattle Opera was resting in a cave, and there were cork tiles on the floor to muffle the sound of your steps... and I didn't take a picture of any of it. But I did take a few of the movie items....</div>

No pictures were allowed at the Japanese fashion exhibit at SAM, so I bought the $60 catalogue book that they published. Totally worth it! Not only does it have pictures from the garments from the exhibit, but pictures from the runway when the garments were first shown. You get a much better idea of how the garments fit and move by seeing them on models rather than mannequins.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And Simon Doonan and Jonathan Adler were there too. I didn't see them myself, but I visited with someone at the museum who had and had pictures as proof! We are so cool in the Northwest.</div>

There was something moving about in the vent pipe that runs over my desk. I heard it two nights ago, but when I stood on my desk to figure out where it was, it was totally silent. Yesterday morning, I was working in the basement and heard it again. This time it was distinct fluttering and was definitely in the pipe. I suspected a bird. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After researching the plumbing You Tube videos about vent pipes and pipe cutting (you can find everything on You Tube), I made the bold decision to cut open the pipe with a saw and try to get the little bird out.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFWuUPcru6_K26P49ULY5WpEf61mdISaSY0qhDukSZbb2-kr1xFfbLVsw51E7RQ7U4G5PSsivqSTInL-2RbXR8PuFHiKh0dVL5jUQb9zfEaSsDdFg8I7TCmCzzxfbV8-1bbXNh/s1600/IMG_9514.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFWuUPcru6_K26P49ULY5WpEf61mdISaSY0qhDukSZbb2-kr1xFfbLVsw51E7RQ7U4G5PSsivqSTInL-2RbXR8PuFHiKh0dVL5jUQb9zfEaSsDdFg8I7TCmCzzxfbV8-1bbXNh/s320/IMG_9514.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I wound up cutting an 18" section out which had to be cut into two pieces to remove it. I would like to point out that the spouse was gone to an appointment during all this.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfT3FBLACqY__a-S1A_UiC98ZXH_-5VdiICTqZ6D5964DroKN2S59kNLkxL5MhNipXIBh_oRcG6y83cwaPOpqsmFvDLmEHLmIkuWI5K0STNsnZSHdshQRgdp8Rgazf17a4kYRB/s1600/IMG_9515.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfT3FBLACqY__a-S1A_UiC98ZXH_-5VdiICTqZ6D5964DroKN2S59kNLkxL5MhNipXIBh_oRcG6y83cwaPOpqsmFvDLmEHLmIkuWI5K0STNsnZSHdshQRgdp8Rgazf17a4kYRB/s320/IMG_9515.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then I waited with a box and landing zone set up below the open pipe... which smells because it is the toilet vent.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8mwAupM1ZZcfWq41QKGuAKyMXaT0C97MWS_Tsujb8-e1UGboJ4bGRYxak2AOW2Fip50vxc404p-y6HfZ9J9EYAUbq3JwdP2O0-7lK_5_HZYdid3-1-IT6AqStrN1AxWi6Dodc/s1600/IMG_9516.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8mwAupM1ZZcfWq41QKGuAKyMXaT0C97MWS_Tsujb8-e1UGboJ4bGRYxak2AOW2Fip50vxc404p-y6HfZ9J9EYAUbq3JwdP2O0-7lK_5_HZYdid3-1-IT6AqStrN1AxWi6Dodc/s320/IMG_9516.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I could hear fluttering, but nothing came out. So I climbed up with a flashlight and looked into the vent (which really smells) and could see nothing. Just pipe. I needed to make something to "see" for me. I had an old <a href="http://www.macally.com/EN/?page_id=2290" target="_blank">Icecam web cam</a>. It was small and could fit through the 2" pipe. The camera and drivers are so old, they wouldn't install on my main computer. Fortunately we have a very old, but functional PowerPC which accepted the drivers. I taped the camera to a stick and plugged in all the USB cables that I could find.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBtv2MYmHXRc7xPP8CDlob1oyIKp74HEwShy3ldgKQqfqRcVYETXWxbNF33lbLh6Ee2BsRjPZbTRW-4uq1onif4oj3FvnYU6NKLiS7zwlsbHDszWJtb6LWSHQG-Gaikntq4QAC/s1600/IMG_9517.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBtv2MYmHXRc7xPP8CDlob1oyIKp74HEwShy3ldgKQqfqRcVYETXWxbNF33lbLh6Ee2BsRjPZbTRW-4uq1onif4oj3FvnYU6NKLiS7zwlsbHDszWJtb6LWSHQG-Gaikntq4QAC/s320/IMG_9517.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Unfortunately the stick would not make the turn to get into the pipe due to the floor joists AND there wasn't enough light. So onto the Second Prototype.... I used somewhat flexible green garden stakes and taped the camera to that. Then I added a very small light bulb. The garden stake didn't work.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgL_R1QjgApqaPrFia_vMNvnE-KMJga1ADJEHM1WCvbqUT_Sj-VjxJzIG4tvAA1FFzzUoje222SbudYxzvtuV87fX8KipcFy-_FqXRCkSV2nHb1tdlnHY2rRbs2aTtsn6ThjkvC/s1600/IMG_9519.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgL_R1QjgApqaPrFia_vMNvnE-KMJga1ADJEHM1WCvbqUT_Sj-VjxJzIG4tvAA1FFzzUoje222SbudYxzvtuV87fX8KipcFy-_FqXRCkSV2nHb1tdlnHY2rRbs2aTtsn6ThjkvC/s320/IMG_9519.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Due to the narrow pipe opening the camera would only fit through the opening with the lens pointing down rather then forward. We (myself, Mister e and Miss E) got lovely views of a dusty sediment along the bottom of the pipe. I tried to stick it in with a 90 degree bend in the flex cable, but the overall width was too wide.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil9XFmQV0MtPQ9W8DFnoaufiDNbxVkpEKT1fKOBHsvpyfsE6Lhj1UfBmA2qwTKCKALnoTGDRrbOjb6gaJxUz5CSpmDgrCam1pFkTn0H3UN2y58SHWJXaynkbhd6dnzCyaQCm6i/s1600/IMG_9520.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil9XFmQV0MtPQ9W8DFnoaufiDNbxVkpEKT1fKOBHsvpyfsE6Lhj1UfBmA2qwTKCKALnoTGDRrbOjb6gaJxUz5CSpmDgrCam1pFkTn0H3UN2y58SHWJXaynkbhd6dnzCyaQCm6i/s320/IMG_9520.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So I removed the housing from the camera, and taped the circuit board which held the lens directly to the end of Prototype Three. The new material for the rod is a drain snake. It is flexible enough to make the turn to get into the pipe, but firm enough to continue pushing through. At this point, I have used up all the duct tape in the house and have moved onto electrical tape. I taped the Camera Snake off in 12" increments, so we could estimate how far in the pipe we were going. At about this point, the spouse came home and found us in the basement with the cut pipe, tape everywhere, wires and extension cords running across the floor, the vacuum, the dog, and tools all supporting this exploration project as well as doll clothes in process from earlier in the day. Surprise is not exactly the word I would use to describe his reaction.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkT0D5QTbs3lRJl4FBlzthz25KqYkXV5uKdHj7dW3hXfUSGcVcEljZQiJM1FGwsCA-aaUc-oESvnqP0Sq9X4sOy7HdrX-6sMHNsVCkfdW7hc1ITGVL2HKiv9pqjLKrpaGOS0Eb/s1600/IMG_9521.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkT0D5QTbs3lRJl4FBlzthz25KqYkXV5uKdHj7dW3hXfUSGcVcEljZQiJM1FGwsCA-aaUc-oESvnqP0Sq9X4sOy7HdrX-6sMHNsVCkfdW7hc1ITGVL2HKiv9pqjLKrpaGOS0Eb/s320/IMG_9521.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We went in as far as we could go, but there was a 90 degree turn that went straight down that eventually connects with the sewer pipe. My hack camera could not make the turn. We were not able to see the bird. He made a few noises at 2:30pm and then was silent. After a long phone call with my father (discussing plumbing and plugging up said plumbing), we decided that a test flush on the basement toilet was in order. Everything seemed to work well which meant that the bird in the pipe had dropped through the vent pipe and into the sewer pipe and was now on his way to the sewer system. Sad.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I would like to note that if the spouse had not come home when he did, I was fully prepared to rip into the wall behind the toiled and cut that pipe too. I have to touch up the paint in the bathroom anyway, so patching a wall wouldn't make that much more of a mess.</div>

My family celebrated our Century Farm status on June 22 with a big party and a presentation of a plaque and sign for the farm. The farm is 140 years old and for 130 years we have farmed the same land continuously. To qualify for a Century Farm, the same land must be farmed continuously for 100 years, AND you must be able to prove this with supporting paperwork. <br />
<br />
There was lots of yard work, tree removal, pruning, and general prep before the event. Then my spouse and I flew off to Vegas for a lovely three nights to warm up and relax. My parents watched the kids during that time which was the BEST anniversary gift ever!!!! Hint: you can give us that gift every year and there would be no complaints!<br />
<br />
Since the 200 year anniversary of the farm is in 70 years, Mister e has gleefully agreed to arrange the festivities in 2083. We can all rest easier now that those plans are in place.<br />
<br />
Yesterday, Miss E and I got busy with some doll clothes using this vintage pattern:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All done! The blouse has pin tucks and back buttons. The skirt is a full circle skirt.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKvmBquooBhzVmuXrkW-GnBokkVlk0wYis3VBYJVWvaZtoM0LOqtqvhH60GIQylUDhrHhVd9pT9PdlSNaQF0ZJVQXG2rLW-hP1rKC6XSPdmpUmO4UaYxJOvgVKvqgYArRTXNX6/s1600/IMG_9511.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKvmBquooBhzVmuXrkW-GnBokkVlk0wYis3VBYJVWvaZtoM0LOqtqvhH60GIQylUDhrHhVd9pT9PdlSNaQF0ZJVQXG2rLW-hP1rKC6XSPdmpUmO4UaYxJOvgVKvqgYArRTXNX6/s320/IMG_9511.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The clothing items in this pattern are constructed in the same way an actual garment would be constructed. The waistband is clean finished and there is a lap opening in the back. The blouse has clean finished plackets at the back. Neither piece took long to construct. It probably took more time to dissect the pattern instructions than to sew. We just purchased two new McCalls 18" Doll Clothes patterns. I am curious to see if the attention to detail is still as high.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Mister e said that he wanted a doll too. We found <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/TwiceLovedDolls" target="_blank">these</a> on Etsy... which are amazing. Very few companies do boy dolls. I wasn't ready to spend over $90 on a doll, so I thought we would go buy a doll at Target and boy-ize it with a haircut, lipstick removal and boy clothes. However, after we got her out of the box, e has decided to keep her as a girl for now. We will see how this progresses.</div>

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have always admired the stuffed, weighted pillows that some shoe stores put inside the boot shaft when the boot is on display. This holds up the shaft so you can see the entire boot while shopping; BUT it also prevents creases from forming in the leather from storing boots flopped over. Another option is to store boots flat in their shoe boxes, but that takes up space. I decided to make a set of boot pillows for myself. (I do not know if these are actually called Boot Pillows, but it is descriptive.)</div>

I cut 12"w x 15"h pieces of muslin for each pillow. Then I folded each rectangle in half so if was 6"w x 15" h and sewed around the edge. I left an opening in the middle of the seam.</div>

The first half of the course covers Gaming and the second half covers Immersive Environments. I do quite a bit of work with immersive environments in Second Life (for work) and Minecraft (for fun). I am hoping to learn some things to make my online courses more exciting!</div>

There are some discrepancies between the picture on the front of the pattern and the actual dress. Most noticeably in the sleeve head. I am going to try pressing the seam allowance into the body to get some of that puff to de-puff. I even took the sleeves out once and trimmed some off the cap area, but I think I need to reduce the width of the sleeve at the cap as well. This would require a total recut, so I think I will try some seam allowance manipulation and serious pressing before I take it apart again. Also the bodice is more poofy that I thought it would be. It has tucks at the waist rather than darts. Again, the pattern picture that I found is much more smooth. Also the model appears to have a 19" waist and sloping shoulders which probably helps the overall proportions. So not my shape.</div>

Unfortunately I didn't quite have enough, so I had to space them out a little farther. On a women's button front, you need one button in line with the apex of the bust to keep things from gaping. This is especially true if you are larger busted. You will notice that I do not have a button at that location on this dress as I ran out of buttons. I have a snap sewn in the placket at that location. I have several vintage dresses that use tiny snaps and hook-and-eye closures to keep things closed or flat.<br />
