Las Vegas Girly Trip

My dear friend, Ilena, and I try to take a girly trip every 2 years or so.  This time we went back to Las Vegas.  We've been there twice already together and liked it... so we went again.  Here are some of the highlights.

This is an extremely large (as in bigger than my head) Rueben Sandwich from The Carnegie Deli in the Mirage.  We had to pace ourselves because we shared a piece of their cheesecake the night before and wanted to come back for a sandwich.  We shared this one, but really it could feed a family of four.  The pastrami was excellent! Check Ilena's blog for a picture of me with the Reuben for scale.

Then, of course, we had to see the conservatory at the Bellagio.

This low mossy flower bed had water shooting in arcs that was timed to music.  I took about 30 pictures before I was able to really catch what the water was doing.

This is the biggest chocolate fountain that I have ever seen! It has milk, white, and dark chocolate flowing down in three separate waterfalls.

The glass was really thick... so no chance of sampling.

We had a wonderful time and spent a half a day at the spa at Paris getting scrubbed, massaged, and our toes and fingers painted... then it was off to the pool for some R&R, reading, and general laying about.

We went to The Beatles Love. Which was amazing! The stage and the costumes and the music... it was all just beautiful. We were on the edge of our seats! We wanted to see Criss Angel's Believe but they pushed out the preview date... so it will have to wait.... but the costumes are amazing...






Definitely a must see next time I'm down there.

End of Summer

I need to get creative again. Things have been so busy lately that I have completely lost sight of why I started this blog.  My freelance work has remained steady rather than having breaks between seasons, my clients have been rolling them back to back.  I miss the 6 week break between projects.  Things should settle down mid-October though and then I can do other things... maybe I'll finally finish that sweater I've been knitting... since last year.

So here's a recap of some of the summer creativity...
Miss Elsie wanted to learn how to sew. Note to self: almost 6 years old is not old enough to learn to use a sewing machine.


She practiced on paper following lines but really had trouble sewing her little purse. So I had her sew some of the big seams... and then I finished it.


Her attention span barely made it past the fabric selection phase.



It turned out really, really cute. A nice jumble of fabrics, but very rich in color. She picked out the big brass button herself.


... and of course did not want her picture to be taken with her creation.

Then there was the giant flea market that we go to every July for my birthday.

My flowers have really been lacking this summer... it has been so cold. But we seem to be having some last minute warm weather so my dahlias are starting to put on a show...

So as you see not many sewing, home, knitting, crafting projects.  With cooler weather coming and the outside work ending, my interests should shift inside.  I also have a bunch of beads that need strung together into a necklace.. but I don't think I'll post that until I'm closer to actually finishing.

Loss

We had to tell our beloved cat, Newman, good-bye today.  His kidney's started to fail last fall.  We were able to keep him feeling good with medicine and fluids until a couple of weeks ago, but couldn't do any more.

We will miss him greatly.

Family Road Trip

A couple of weeks ago we drove to Boise, ID to visit my sister and her family. Instead of taking I-84 (for the millionth time) we cut across central Oregon and visited the Painted Hills on our way over. Something to break up the usual 7 hour trip.

The hills are striped with different colors of clay making the entire landscape look like a water color painting.

It was hot, hot, hot... but the sky was intensely blue which made the red clay seem even more vibrant.  Our little explorers found the whole thing very interesting.

There is a short 1/4 mile trail that goes around one of the small red hills.  Easy walking and matches the attention span of Mister e.

The colors were amazing!  One minute you are driving through dried grass and scrub and the next hills swirling with color come into view.

The hills were very dry so the surface was all pebbly and cracked.  The sign said that when it rains the hills become smooth with the cracks sealed.  That would be worth the drive to see!  It's about 4 hours from our house in Portland, so that trip will have to wait for a bit.

Home projects never quite go as planned...

I have made a total of three trips to IKEA to purchase and return lights. I finally have the correct lights to illuminate my board. It started with this...

The magnet boards fit, but they needed their own set of lights.

Then I covered them in some neutral linen-like fabric.

But the additional thickness of the fabric made the boards not quite line up with their screws.  So in the process of trying to reattach them, I pushed the screws through the drywall.  So I had to drag out the power drill, and drill holes, and put in anchors.  I put the last two up today and am happy with the end result.  And glad the whole mess is done.  I really get unhappy when a project goes awry and takes an additional day to complete.

I also treated myself to this beautiful glass vase from IKEA (I visited it every time I was there, so on the last trip, I just went ahead and bought it.)  It is a deep red color which really doesn't show in the picture.  You will notice on the ceiling the tiny little lights that will illuminate the board area.  It's hard to believe that something so small could result in so many trips to a store.

So as a cheer-me-up, I baked some blue berry pie yesterday.  Our blue berry bushes are in over-drive this year... YAY!  And there's nothing better than pie!

I even had enough to make a mini-pie for the kids.


So lovely and golden... yummy!

Home Again... home again

I've been back in Portland for a week and am just now coming up for air. My freelance clients have been keeping me hopping with last minute questions and needs. Miss E is taking swimming lessons and likes to have me take her in the mornings. My sister and I have been busy updating the Mister Judy site with a few new product items. We are also trying to put together a catalog/look book. We are still one fabric short, so we can't finish and print the darn thing yet. I'm really wanting to spend some time doing something creative but can't seem to find the time between working, kids, house, garden, and other things. I am redoing my inspiration board area in my studio with new magnet boards (we are trying to become a tack/push-pin free household as it is safer on the kids and on my feet). I am also adding new lighting above the board... which resulted in 2 trips to IKEA... including the take-a-number return process.... very, very slow.

On a positive note... my owls returned safely with me.



I do have some lovely pictures to post from a Flea Market that I went to in the middle of July... and my garden is really looking good.. except for the part that I haven't weeded yet. Ah well... a post for another time.

Back at the University

I'm back on campus for my last week of the summer class that I teach. My office is pretty bleak since I use whatever space is available. And since I'm only here for a week at a time, it really doesn't make sense to drag a bunch of stuff in here... only to pack it up and take it home on Friday.
But the spouse sent me these lovely flowers for my birthday (which is Friday) and to make my office more cheery...



The smaller bouquet I cut from Mom's garden yesterday. The little owls are from an owl downsizing project here at the School of Family and Consumer Sciences. Apparently a former faculty member had quite an owl collection, and it's up for grabs in the kitchen. I passed on it the first time, but was drawn to these little white owls. They are salt and pepper shakers (which I'm not normally fond of), but after some cleaning they are growing on me.

Back Home to Portland

I have been AWOL from my blog. I have spent the last week and a half in Idaho at my parent's house and at the University of Idaho and in Las Vegas. Last year I started teaching a summer course at the U of I (Adobe Illustrator for Apparel Design). It was received very well, so I was invited back to teach again. I have a bigger class this time, but things seems to be going well. I have some flexibility with the class dates, so I lined it up with our 10 year anniversary.... so we could conveniently leave the kids with my parents and jet off to Las Vegas for a 3 nights.
It was really, really hot... 115 degrees on some days. We had our vows renewed by an Elvis impersonator... which was SWEET!... and made me giggle. He made about $20 a minute... pretty good wages if you can sing and act like The King. And we did a fair amount of shopping... because it was air-conditioned.

... so in I went and bought a fabulous knit dress.
We flew back to the farm yesterday and drove home today.. 7 and a half hours with neither kid asleep for longer than 20 minutes. I'm beat! I haven't even checked on the status of my garden, but it sort of rained this evening, so I figure I can water tomorrow.

Dress Redo...

This is a picture of my mother and myself about 1971 or 72. She is wearing the dress from her brother's wedding. A lovely yellow cotton number with flocked white flowers and a train. She gave this dress to Elsie a few months ago for dress-up play.

Fast forward to about 2 weeks ago, when Elsie was going to participate in her school's Storybook Parade. Each student was to dress as a character from their favorite book and march through the neighborhood led by a police escort and a parade marshall in a red convertible. Quite the To Do for a grade school! Of course, Elsie did not want to be any character that we already had a costume for.... Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, Tinkerbell from Peter Pan, Cinderella... etc. Even though I presented each of them in an exciting manner with the promise of accessories and a grand styling event. She wanted to be Belle (or Beauty) from Beauty and the Beast and that was it. So out came the old dress. I took it apart and re-made it into this...

We had to do a lot of layering underneath to keep her warm. Next year maybe we can do a character than involves an umbrella... probably good for this climate.

It's still raining...

So many of my roses are in bud and it is not warm enough for them to open. Some of the buds are rotting or just falling apart... depressing. I was able to find a few that were open and gorgeous this morning.




If we could have one warm sunny day, everything would bloom and smell wonderful.... just one day... that's all I'm asking.

It rains a lot here....

...sometimes I don't think warm, dry weather will ever arrive. We are skipping spring, so I'm hoping for summer.

I didn't grow these. We opted to spend our Memorial Day weekend gas money on two baskets of fuchsias and stay home. I think in the long run we saved money and will get to enjoy what we spent all summer long.
Now if it would just warm up so I could have my morning coffee on the porch.
